To promote the importance and practical value of Mathematical Modeling in Engineering, we were pleased to have Professor
Jianguo DAI and Associate Professor Andy LEUNG from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Hong Kong Polytechnic University to deliver teachers and students workshops titled “Application of Mathematical Modeling in Civil Engineering”. The workshop was held on 28 Nov 2020 through ZOOM
The workshop was divided into teachers (morning) and students (afternoon) sessions. Prof. Dai started the workshop with his profession "Structural Analysis”. Structural Analysis is totally related to the safety of buildings. He explained the mathematics and physics principles of buildings by using typhoon “Mangkhut” and “311-Japan Earthquake” incidents.
Dr Leung who is professional in Geo-technical Engineering. Reinforcement of slopes, underground tunnels and soil materials are part of this field. Dr Leung mentioned that there were serious landslides incidents in Hong Kong in 1970s, it caused severe damage to both life and properties. It alerted the government on the safety of slopes and to pay more attention to the reinforcement and maintenance of slopes. Besides of these, Dr Leung covered the topics of ground mining and land reclamation.
For the mathematical content, Prof. Dai and Dr Leung started with basic physics and mathematical calculations, such as Pressure = Force / Area. And then gradually illustrated how mathematical modeling and physics are used to analyze building structures, stability of slopes, etc. in civil engineering. In addition, Prof. Dai briefly introduced an advanced mathematical method called “Finite Element Method” and usage in structural analysis.
They showed us the computer simulation they have used to help them on their research work, the operation behind the simulation is based on physics and mathematics. Also they brought some building models for better illustration of civil engineering work.
In the students session, two scholars were considerate. They adjusted the contents and started with fundamental ideas which students have learnt already. They slowed down the process and guided students established a basic picture of civil engineering.
