Applications of mathematical modeling in the technology development and products of Huawei.

The field study in Huawei Technologies Company completed successfully on 26 August under the sponsor of Quality Education Fund and support of Huawei Technologies Company. Huawei is a leading global provider of information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure and smart devices.

On 26 August, a group of HK students and teachers visited Huawei's smartphones manufacturing facilities in Dongguan under the leadership of their staff. Then, we visited the new campus in Songshan Lake which started operating last year and had a workshop to understand how mathematical modeling is applied in Huawei's technologies and products by professionals from Huawei.

In the workshop, Dr. ZHANG Rui from Huawei Future Network Theory Laboratory introduced the application of mathematical modeling in image processing with a topic "Mathematical Modeling of Compressed Sensing". This is a common technology in image and signal processing, and the photography in mobile phone is one of the applications. Dr. ZHANG also mentioned Image Reconstruction which is a method to rebuild the 3 dimensional information (shape) of an object through mathematical modeling and coding.

He talked about the importance and roles of mathematics, "The underlying mathematics (of a problem/model) gave the principle(s), certainty and heuristic; guarantees that certain outcomes will always result; math persuaded, inspired."

Dr. YANG Chuan was the 2nd speaker who used Huawei mobile phones as example. There are still differences between camera of mobile phone and professional camera in the way of features availability and overall experience. Therefore, mathematical modeling is applied during mobile phone development to simulate the effect of shutter and aperture.

During the Q&A session, a teacher asked, "What mathematics you learnt in high school do you think is useful for your further studies and career path?"

Dr. ZHANG Rui answered, "Leaning mathematics is a life-long process, it should not be limited in high school or university study. A good logical thinking can be trained through learning mathematics."

Another teacher concerned about how to advise his students in choosing the career path because the students perform well in various subjects. Both speakers emphasized that interest is the most important element, and students should choose what you are interested in regardless of the popularity of the subject.

At the end of the Field Study, teachers and students had a chance to get on a in-campus train tour to enjoy the view of Huawei's Songshan Lake Campus under the leading of Huawei's staff. The campus imitated 12 famous cites or districts in Europe, such as Oxford, Luxembourg etc.
